ASSEMBLY COMPRISING A LOCKED FIXING STUD
DESCRIPTION
The subject of the invention is an assembly comprising a locked fastening stud.
Such an arrangement can be applied to the fixing of two circular casings of turbines, provided with flat circular flanges that are attached. The studs pass through holes in these flanges and are screwed into a prison nut, integrated into one of the flanges, at one end. Their opposite end receives a clamping nut by which the flanges are held tight on one another.
Such assemblies must be maintained with sufficient clamping force to guard against accidental loosening due to, for example, vibrations in service. Dynamometric tools can be used to apply predefined tightening torques. Lock keys can also be added to prevent loosening rotation. A locking key is a part which, in its most general embodiment, is in contact with the stud so as to block it once it has been put in place. In a known embodiment, the studs have portions of polygonal section, hexagonal for example, and the wafer-shaped keys comprising a pair of equally hexagonal section fingerprints that is threaded onto a pair of consecutive studs before installing the tightening nuts. The studs hold both ends of the key thus preventing it from rotating, and the key retains each of the studs (from US 6,641,324 B2).
A first disadvantage of this design is that the studs must be at determined distances and if possible uniform, otherwise a large number of key widths would be necessary. However such uniform spacings are impossible if a part of the fixing ring must be reserved for other equipment such as fluid tubes, or probes. Another disadvantage, often encountered, is that it is problematic to apply the tightening torque without risk of damaging parts of the assembly such as the key or the flange. Another risk is that if screwing the studs in the captive nuts is excessive, the nuts may be damaged too, if for example a larger diameter portion of the stud collides with them.
The subject of the invention is an assembly of the kind described up to now, in which is added an individual locking key, that is to say associated with a single stud, which makes it possible to apply a tightening torque sufficient to ensure the rigidity of the assembly and which is not likely to be damaged or damage adjacent parts during this clamping, and is also able to avoid excessive screwing of the stud inadvertently.
In a general form, the invention consists of an assembly comprising a fastening stud, two superposed flanges through which the bolt passes, a nut depending on one of the flanges and in which one end of the stud is screwed, a tightening nut screwed to an opposite end of the stud, and a locking key clamped between the clamping nut and another of the flanges, the locking key comprising a main body provided with a bore, the bore having a non-circular section and being occupied by a corresponding section portion of the stud, characterized in that the main body is extended by a portion extending beyond a border of said other flange in a direction perpendicular to the stud then by a projecting portion of the main body in the direction of stud and extending in front of said border.
The protruding portion allows limited angle rotation of the stud once the key has been installed thereon, abutting the flange. This avoids excessive screwing of the stud which could damage the captive nut and require a complete disassembly of the structure to then replace the nut. The specified tightening torque may, however, be applied to the stud, with the efforts being concentrated primarily in the locking key and in adjacent flange and stud portions, which portions are dimensioned to be strong. The adjustment of the locking key on the stud is finally easy.
Particularly preferably, the protruding portion of the main body comprises a pair of separate supports on said other flange, to ensure from the outset the position of the locking key and its authorized angular movement.
The supports are advantageously designed to be able to cause no damage against the flange; they can thus include rounded outlines. The invention will now be described in its various aspects, characteristics and advantages in connection with the figures, which represent an embodiment thereof: FIG. 1 represents the sectional assembly, FIG. 2 represents the complete device, comprising a a large number of these assemblies, in perspective, FIG. 3 shows in detail the support of the locking key on the casing, FIGS. 4 and 5 represent in perspective the locking key, and FIG. 6 represents the bolt. isolated. The assembly of FIG. 1 comprises a stud 1, the two opposite ends 2 and 3 of which are threaded, and whose rod comprises, between the ends 2 and 3, a central part with a hexagonal section (hexagonal part 4), and a enlarged part 5. The stud 1 serves to assemble two casings 6 and 7 which each comprise a flange 8 or 9 circular and plane, and it penetrates for this in aligned bores of the flanges 8 and 9 and holds them superimposed one on the other. 'other. The flange 8 of one of the housings 6 comprises a centering edge 10, cylindrical and resting on the other housing 7. The assembly also comprises a locking key 11 which is an essential aspect of the invention, possibly a support 12 of equipment not shown - as is very common in aeronautics - and two nuts 13 and 14, the nut 13 being a prisoner nut crimped in the housing 7 by a conical skirt 15 opening towards the another housing 6 and the nut 14 being a clamping nut. The first end 2 is screwed into the captive nut 13, the enlarged portion 5 is not far from the flange 15, the hexagonal portion 4 is located in a recess 16 (shown in FIGS. 4 and 5) of the locking key 11 and the clamping nut 14 is threadedly engaged on the opposite end 3; the flanges 9, 8, the locking key 11 and the support 12 are tightened in this order from the locking nut 13 to the clamping nut 14. In the mounting state, the front edge of the enlarged section 5 is close to the skirt 15 and may rub on it and damage it, so with all the prisoner nut 13, if the stud 1 is screwed excessively. The lock key 11 obviates this situation.
It is represented in FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and 5. It comprises a main body 17 in the form of a thick plate in which the cavity 16 is hollowed out. The footprint 16 has a hexagonal section so as to accommodate the hexagonal part 4 with a little play, but preventing their mutual rotation. The main body 17 further comprises two separate wings 18, which extend projecting next to one another and in the same direction, included in the main extension plane of the main body 17; this direction is, in the mounting position, the outer radial direction, so that the wings 18 protrude from the flange 8 of the housing 6 adjacent to the locking key 11 and the flat face of the edge 10 which terminates. The end of the wings 18 is curved into a border 19 which overhangs the peripheral face of the border 10 at a short distance from it in a state of commencement of the assembly. In the final state of the assembly, the position of FIG. 3 is observed, in which the locking key 11 has slightly tilted and one of the borders 19 (on the right in this FIG. 3) bears on the edge 10 of the casing. 6. The curbs 19 are shaped with a rounded support 20 which avoids too small surface contact and excessive stress concentrations.
The assembly mode is as follows. The flanges 8 and 9 being superimposed and their bores aligned, each of the studs 1 is introduced through the end 2 into the bore of the flange 8 and that of the flange 9 and the end 2 is screwed into the captive nut 13. When the enlarged portion 5 reaches the skirt 15, the screwing is immediately interrupted and the stud 1 is instead unscrewed slightly by a specified amount, for example an eighth of a turn. The locking key 11 is inserted, and the stud 1 is then screwed and tightened to the torque specified by the setting of a torque tool, the locking key 11 rocking until one of the rounded supports 20 touches the border 10 of the flange 8 and that the state of Figure 3 is obtained. The screwing movement is insufficient for the edge of the enlarged section 5 to touch again the collar 15. No excessive stress, no damage is therefore caused to the prisoner nut 13. The support 12 can then be installed when it is provided, and the tightening nut 14 screwed in turn. In case of loosening of the assembly, the rotation of the stud 1 is limited to the small angle which carries the other support 20 against the edge 10.
A great advantage of the locking key 11 according to the invention is that it is associated with a single stud 1 and can be installed easily and without any unforeseen. Its resistance is sufficient for a moderate mass. Some design details are noted that make it possible to optimize the compromise between these two requirements: a chamfer 21 established on the outer faces of the connection of the flanges 18 and the edges 19, and a rounded portion 22 to the connection of their inner faces; other chamfers 23 and 24 established on both sides of the main body 17 at its connection with the wings 18, which are less thick; a concavity 25 with a constant radius of curvature operated in the middle of the outer radial edge of the main body 17, in the center of this edge and between the flanges 18; a generally triangular shape of the main body 17, bounded by two lateral faces 26 moving away from each other towards the wings 18; and in a general way the suppression of the sharp angles of connection, replaced again by chamfers.

Claims (5)

1. An assembly comprising a bolt (1) fixing, two flanges (8, 9) superimposed through which the stud, a nut (1) depending on one of the flanges (9) and wherein one end (2) of the stud is screwed, an adjusting nut (14) screwed to an opposite end (3) of the stud, and a locking key (11) clamped between the clamping nut (14) and another of the clamps (8), the key lock comprising a main body (17) provided with a bore (16), the bore having a non-circular section and being occupied for a portion (14) of corresponding section of the stud, characterized in that the main body (17) is extended by a portion (18) extending beyond a border (10) of said other flange (8) in a direction perpendicular to the stud (1) and then by a portion (19) projecting from the main body towards the stud and extending in front of said border (10).

2. An assembly according to claim 1, characterized in that the flanges (8, 9) belong to turbine housings (6, 7) assembled to each other by said flanges.
